Tips

Sending us something sensitive

If you work for the city, a school district, or a special district and you want to share a document, a few things are worth knowing before you do.

Do not use your employer's systems

Email sent from a government account, on a government device, or over a government network can be logged by your employer and may itself be a public record. Use a personal device on a personal network.

What we can promise

We will not publish your name, or details that would identify you, without your agreement. We will tell you honestly what we can and cannot protect before you send anything sensitive, rather than after.

What helps

The underlying document beats a description of it. Tell us what it is, where it came from, and what you think it shows. We independently verify before publishing, and we may need to ask follow-up questions.

Public records

You do not need to be an insider. If there is a record you think should exist, tell us and we will request it. If a request gets denied, that is often a story on its own.
